The Skull Cap Trend, Explained: "How Dudes Act 0.01 Seconds After Putting On a Skull Cap"

What the skull cap trend on TikTok is, how the before-and-after format works, the sound behind it ("original sound - SoulReligion"), how it spread in October 2026, the pet version, and how to make your own from one photo.

The Skull Cap Trend, Explained: "How Dudes Act 0.01 Seconds After Putting On a Skull Cap"

If your For You page has been full of guys in glasses who pull a black beanie down over their head and come back, one cut later, as brooding strangers in the dark, you've seen the skull cap trend. Its caption says it all: "How dudes act 0.01 seconds after putting on a skull cap". Here's how the format works, the sound behind it, how it spread and how to make your own.

The format

Every take is one selfie with one hard cut:

  1. The before. A bright room and a deliberately dorky look: glasses, a plaid or button-up shirt, an awkward closed-mouth smile. You fiddle with a plain black knit skull cap.
  2. Cap down. You stretch it open and pull it down over your head, often over your face.
  3. The cut. At the beat drop the video cuts to the same room with the lights off.
  4. The after. Black hoodie, hood up over the cap, glasses gone, hands on the hood, and a cold, dead-serious stare into the lens.

The joke is how little changes and how much it seems to: same person, same room, one cap. Comments pile on about "masc potential" and who the after shot looks like.

The sound

The trend uses the TikTok sound "original sound - SoulReligion", uploaded in 2023. It's Bryson Tiller's verse from DJ Khaled's "Wild Thoughts" (with Rihanna and Bryson Tiller), and more than 83,000 videos use it. The slow, moody verse is what sells the after shot: the cut is timed so the beat drops right as the lights go off.

How it spread

  • 6 October 2026: @baldheadbrudda posts one of the first skull cap takes.
  • Mid-October: takes pass 6 and 12 million views, and the caption becomes a template of its own.
  • 18 October: @antoniopieterss posts a take that passes 12.4 million views; it's the one our person version follows.
  • 25 October: @noahnellys puts a skull cap on his puppy too, and pet takes start appearing.

The pet version

In the pet takes the owner holds a puppy up to the camera in the bright before; after the cut both are in the dark wearing black skull caps, and the puppy's blank stare does the work. It's the same joke, cuter.

How to make your own

You can film it for real: a black knit cap, a black hoodie, two lighting setups and a clean cut on the beat. Or use our templates, which make it from one photo:

Both come with the trend sound, the beat on the cut; download the version without music if you'd rather post with TikTok's own sound.
