A bright bedroom, glasses, an awkward closed-mouth smile and a black knit cap in your hands. You pull it down over your head, the video cuts, and suddenly the lights are off, the hood is up, the glasses are gone and you're staring into the camera like someone else entirely. That's the skull cap trend, "how dudes act 0.01 seconds after putting on a skull cap", the glow-up meme of October 2026. Here's how to make it from one photo.
What is the skull cap trend?
It's a 10-second selfie with one hard cut. Before the cut you're deliberately dorky in a bright room; after it you're the same person in the dark, a plain black skull cap on, a black hoodie with the hood pulled up over it, and a cold stare into the lens. The joke is the contrast, and the cut lands right on the beat drop of the trend sound.
The earliest take we found is from 6 October 2026, and by the third week of October several takes had passed 10 million views. Our skull cap template follows @antoniopieterss's take from 18 October (12.4 million views): the moves, the camera and the cut, not his face.
How to make it
- Open the skull cap template.
- Add one photo of yourself, face sharp and toward the camera, head and shoulders or chest up.
- Pick a version and generate. Every version renders the whole 10 seconds.
- Download the MP4. It comes with the trend sound, the beat on the cut. For TikTok's own sound, pick Download without music instead (see below).
- Post it on TikTok, with the sound already in the file, or with TikTok's sound lined up so the beat drops on the cut.
What happens in the video
- 0–3 s: a bright room, your everyday look; you turn the black cap over in your hands and glance at the camera with an awkward smile.
- 3–4.75 s: you stretch the cap open and pull it down over your head with both hands.
- 4.75 s: the hard cut. Same room, lights off.
- 4.75–10 s: black hoodie, hood up over the cap, glasses off, hands on the hood and a dead-serious stare into the lens.
Does the video have the sound?
Yes. The trend runs on the TikTok sound "original sound - SoulReligion", which is Bryson Tiller's verse from DJ Khaled's "Wild Thoughts", and your video comes with it, lined up so the beat drops on the cut at 4.75 seconds. Want TikTok's own sound instead? Posting with it keeps your video on the sound's page with the rest of the trend: pick Download without music for a silent MP4.
To add it: upload the silent MP4 on TikTok, tap Add sound, search "original sound SoulReligion" (or open the sound from the template page and tap Use this sound), then drag it so the beat drops at about 4.75 seconds, on the cut.
Photos that work best
- Face sharp and forward. The stare after the cut is a close-up. No sunglasses, masks or side profiles.
- Bright, even light. Your features stay steady when the video switches to the dark half.
- Head and shoulders. A selfie-style photo matches the clip; your hair and clothes before the cut come from it.
- Glasses are fine. They stay on in the before and come off after the cut, like in the trend.
- Use your own photo, or one of an adult who said yes. Never a stranger, a child or a public figure.
Can my dog do it?
Yes. The skull cap dog version follows a pet take from 25 October 2026: a young man made up by the AI holds your dog or cat up to the camera, and after the cut both wear black skull caps and stare. You only need one photo of your pet.
What does it cost?
Premium is 20 credits at 480p, 40 at 720p and 70 at 1080p; Balanced starts at 10 credits. Without an account, one video costs from $7.99 at checkout. No watermark, and failed renders and rejected photos are refunded automatically.
FAQ
Is the cap a skull print? No. A "skull cap" here is a plain, close-fitting black knit cap with no brim, no pompom and no print.
Do I need a hoodie or a dark room? No. The template makes the room, the cap, the hoodie and the lighting change; you only bring the photo.
How long does it take? Usually a few minutes. Your photo is reviewed first, then the video renders.
